Mental health nurse

Hi, I'm currently seeing a mental health nurse whilst I wait for my diagnosis but I'm just not 'gelling' with her.  The advice she gives I've heard it all before and it just isn't helping with the anxiety or the depression.  Can I ask have any of you ever asked for a different practitioner?  I just don't know how I go about it and I don't want to seem ungrateful.

Any advice would be very welcome.

  • If you don't ask, you will continue to get treatment which isn't effective for you.

  • Yes, send an email and see they have anyone with autism understanding, its worth a try.  There isn't adult support for autism unless you have care needs, so most of us have to manage without but hopefully one day they will be put something in place.

  • Thank you so much for all of your replies.  It's clear the person I'm talking to has no real understanding of autism so I may, if I feel brave enough, send an email to the service to see if it's possible for me to speak with someone with more experience with ASD.  I've also ordered a book about anxiety and autism which I'm hoping will help.  Thank you all.

  • My ex made go for a stress therapy to 'fix' me

it did not work, psychiatrist was talling me to do things I knew won't happen, like get a job in 6months, because i told myself that it will happen in 6 months doesn't mean it will happen in 6 months, especially that I was trying to find a solution why it didn't work for 15years and I still did not have it

but how to tell proffessional it doesn't work if he did not get it the first time I said that I have no idea why I can't get a job.

    so I played along

and I had to be really careful not to get cornered with straight question so I could say a white lie ''it's helping'', sentence doesn't say whom it's helping

it turned out she couldn't make herself to be with autistic anyway, so it was a waste of time

I'm so happy my relationship is over

  • I've had problems like this, but I never asked for a different helper, I just hoped it would get better. I should have done.

Ask for someone with experience of dealing with people on the Spectrum to help you with your Mental Health. It should be perfectly possible for this to be arranged-and far better for you.

  • Unless she’s got personal experience or training with ASD she isn’t going to be much help. That’s a given I’m afraid.
You are entitled to ask to see someone else. If you don’t feel comfortable to ask, or to call, then send the service an email and let them sort it from their end without your involvement.

  • I'll second that!  Mental Health Services generally dish out NT solutions which do not a lot if anything at all for us.  You could just try saying that in view of the fact that you are awaiting an assessment, could you please have some approaches adapted for autism and talk to someone with some experience of autism.

  • They tend to give out NT advice which isn't always suited to autistic people, you could ask for another but they might offer the same advice.  Anxiety and depression aren't really solved by a bit of advice, it usually takes a lot more than that.  I've had limited support from different mental health professionals over the years so turned to self-help books, I would prefer more than that but it would mean paying for private therapy, especially for my social anxiety.  Mindfulness works for me with anxiety, as I get a break from it, and it helps a bit with depression.
