Starting hobbies and not finishing

  • Before I start, i think that I may have Hugh functioning autism but have never been diagnosed.

I have some hobbies that I still do or have done for a number of years when I was able to get to a class, but I seem to start some new things, do them for a while and then just cannot seem to put in anymore effort. Like I am interested in Japan and Japanese novels, films and series depending on the genre, so I started learning Japanese and thoroughly learnt most of the katakana symbols (got really into it) but then stopped. I learnt italic calligraphy but really needed to do a lot of work to get better, but I haven't bothered to carry on. I also started learning modern calligraphy, but only learnt a few lower case letters then gave up. I also started (paid for) an online yoga teacher training course and worked through a portion of it before not bothering anymore.

I don't like the fact that I have started these things and not bothered anymore, but I don't have the will power or motivation to pick them up again.

I wonder why this is?

Is anyone else like this?

  • Hi! Thanks for sharing. I don't have a diagnosis either, but have self diagnosed as autistic. I often start things and don't finish them too. I feel like I have to do something absolutely 100%, or not at all. And as soon as I can't commit to the 100%, or I loose interest even just a little bit, I stop doing it altogether.

Do you feel like it's the 'all or nothing' scenario, or something else?

  • Well in the case of learning Japanese it was an all or nothing situation, but with the other things I could have given my all to it but didn't, I had the time.
