Hello,

I am a HSP and I go to college.
I don't really like college and I don't like my course, Media. My parents said I have to go to Media because I haven't got enough grades to work somewhere for the rest of my life. I really do want to leave college and work somewhere else - like a garden centre. I like spending time outside in nature and that's where I want to be. I've just begun Media and this morning and last night knowing I have to get up for college, I get nervous. I have been to this college for 3 years now (where I was much happier than now) My parents won't let me leave college even though I desperately find jobs that I like to go to work there because I will enjoy it.
I said to my leaders that I am a HSP and I don't like the noise of fire drills because they frighten me. I requested they give me an advance warning before it happens. They said they can't because it is there for an emergency. However, they let me wear headphones in class when working on the computer. It only happens once or twice a year.
I really do feel stressed out about this because I am sensitive to noise and I don't like sudden noises such as fire drills.
If one did occur when I was in the classroom, I'd probably get upset about the noise and overwhelmed by it.
Before, I'd just try to not be myself during those alarms, that means being happy.
It would really cheer me up if I left college and got a job at a garden centre, which I really want to go to work now because I would find it easy for myself.
Please can you help me or give me advice please.

  • You have tried to explain to your parents that, even if seemed inappropriate, working at a Garden Centre is what you ultimately want do, no? Sadly, they undoubtedly want the best for you, but I'd guess that they think better qualifications to get a better job-and that means letting go of the Garden Centre dream in their opinion. Thing is, if someone on the Spectrum hates something, even if it might be good for them in some ways? They will eventually go where they feel most happy, because that's what they know and want. They think you'll be better off for what they have you working on, probably correctly, but it wouldn't make you happy. That's a very important distinction.. My advice would be to start with Placements/Volunteering at Garden centres if possible and, maybe, your parents will relent on seeing you happy?

    I have explained to my parents that I want to work at a garden centre. I will have a think about volunteering at garden centres.

    Could you maybe switch courses to a gardening type one?
