Destructive

Hi.

My daughter is e and we are awaiting an assessment.

She is really destructive. She does things such as pulls all her clothes out of the drawers and urinates on them, she doesnt do this everyday. Pulls toys out and empties shelves of books then just walks away.

How do I deal with this behaviour and tey and correct it??

Thank you.

  • Well it could be a way of defying being forced to wear clothing she doesn’t like? A lot of autistic people have sensitivity's to uncomfortable frabrics, will rip / cut scratchy labels out etc.

also if you put away things she left out in some particular pattern, or something she left out to use etc. Well she might be pulling out out the toys and books as retaliation for you messing up her pattern or interrupting her hobby / project.

  • She generally doesn't like clothing and I don't force her to wear them  if shed like to be naked she can be.  Shes happy enough to put her pjs on but then does that.

The toy thing I'm unsure off. As she pulls out 3 shelves worth of books then goes onto her next activity

  • I mean it’s clearly not practical for her to be naked (or in pjs) all the time even if she’s still fairly young. There must be times where you have visitors or need to go out and she has to wear clothes. It would be worth finding some she can tolerate. From personal experience I’d say loose fitting pure cotton is probably the best thing to look at. And it’s worth picking out the stitching that holds in the labels to get them out neatly in one piece.

as for the toys … have you tried asking her? If she’s verbal she’s probably at the age where she should be able to articulate basic sentences right?

  • She does wear clothing when we go out. She seems to tolerate them quite well when we get home she generally takes off her trousers but will walk around in her top.

She doesn't really communicate yet. She repeats words but doesnt use sentences so getting her to communicate can be challenging
