Thanks for the advice, they are allowing me to stay with him now, been on the phone with PALS all day and I've filled in a hospital passport. He is expected to be in for around 5-7 days. 

One thing you can check is whether they have applied for a DoLS (Deprivation of Liberty Safeguard) for your son. He sounds like he is unlikely to have mental capacity to consent to his hospital stay and being prevented from seeing you/other family whilst there. A DoLS assessor would be expected to speak to you to discuss your concerns. 

I'd just pester them constantly to be honest and grind them down tell then you intend on getting legal advice if it continues without satisfactory explanation.

How long do you think your son may be in hospital for?  

I don't blame you for leaving, it is shocking how people are being treated. 

I was told to get one, I'm hoping it will do some good. 

Unfortunately people like your son are barely even an afterthought under this government. I spent most of the pandemic as a social worker for adult social care and many of the adults had dementia, so they faced this same distressing scenario for hospital and care home admissions. My father-in-law moved into residential care with dementia in November and Sunday was the first day he has been allowed to leave the home to see us, and we still cannot freely visit him despite so many other areas of life relaxing. 

I've left adult social care largely because of this reason. It isnt a system that I believe in and it was making me extremely unhappy. 

I have one of those.  Never been used in action though.  Theoretically, it should put a flag on the hospital IT system to say what accommodations are needed.

This system seems to have no compassion.

Hi, yes its terrible and yes I am his carer. 

I don't know anything legally that you can do but this is obviously very ethically bad that they have the power to do that to you, this whole blaming everything on covid is starting to get out of hand especially with situations like this. You should obviously be allowed to be with your son you are I'm assuming his main carer that surely must mean something legally.

Do you think a hospital passport would help? 

My husband is charge nurse in our local hospital.  COVID has caused genuine issues but he tells me that exceptions to the no visitors rule could and should be made under exceptional circumstances and this sounds pretty exceptional to me because it's seriously detrimental to your son's health and wellbeing to not have you there.  I'd demand to speak to someone senior.  

Yes - they cannot legally separate a carer from someone.     They will try very hard - they've got very used to bullying people and blaming covid.

Complain to PALS and tell them you do not agree that this line of treatment is in his best interests under the Mental Capacity Act 2005. Unfortunately hospital policy under covid has been very restrictive so they may still say you cannot visit.
