ear plugs - wax or foam?

i'm super noise sensitive --- in terms of ear plugs, the things you jam into your ear canal, has anyone found a preference for wax vs foam ones? the foam ones i've seen on amazing-on have the highest NRR of 33db. i've always had trouble inserting them into my ear canals, but just heard about yanking your ear back before you jam the foam in... the moldable wax ones have a significantly lower NRR of 23db... they seem more comfortable. tho.

anyone have good or bad experiences with either? i suppose it may boil down to personal preference, but the higher NRR sounds good. i guess i'm wondering if that is achieved in a lab......... not in a human ear, but the same could be said for the lower NRR of waxies.

i already have head phones, ear muffs, etc... i'd like something i can easily just carry in a pocket, but which is effective.

happy non-listening!

  • u need to read up on them. new ones come out all the time  and they all have differing features. it takes hours locating just what you want

with the noise cancelling headphones, do you have to be listening to music for them to work?

answer would be no - but u have to do ur own research on which models have that feature. Headphone are incredibly personal as well.

  • to be frank, i really prefer not wearing headphones or plugs, unless maybe for a short period. but i prefer not to. i would think if you wear either, but especially plugs, for 8 hours, that the moisture is not good for your ear.... for instance, the ear canal absolutely must have it's own fungi, yeast, what nots. change the humidity (a fair amount?) with 8 hours of plugs or phones --- i'm just not into it.

maybe i'm paranoid. but since i live in an urban area, i'll have an assortment of foam, wax, headphones, ear muffs... but try to make sure i always have the plugs, no matter what, in a pocket.

with the noise cancelling headphones, do you have to be listening to music for them to work? i've expressly avoided noise cancelling before, partly because i heard battery life suffered on them. also, i'm just not used to new fangled tech.

  • how in the world did u no that?? ru into words? my vocabulary is better than most, but to understand a word, i have to look up the roots, where it came from. if i just memorize the english word, i just can't. it's as tho the word's origins have more meaning to me, or something, more context.

  • i'd worry about germs, fungus, and just general discomfort.

That's why I use disposable ones - you need to look after expensive ones and keep them clean - mine just go in the bin.  Smiley

  • how about the word "Quiz"  ?

it was invented to prove a bet........  isnt this crazy

James Daly was a theatre manager in Dublin in 1782. He once had a bet with a friend that he could introduce a new word into the English language in a day. He then chalked the word "Quiz" on the walls of the city. Daly won the bet, and a useful word came out of it - in terms of vocabulary AND Scrabble.

  • I like the foam ones best. They work for me, help a lot when I'm struggling with noise.

  • I listen to white noise while I study, it helps me relax and get in the zone.

  • I like the foam ones from the brand "Spark Plugs", the shape and the type of foam makes them work a lot better than other foam ones in my experience. They are the only ones that fit in my ear properly.

  • I used putty type for years. Can generate a complete seal if done right. But I stopped using them because they can damage the tiny hairs in your inner ear which will damage your hearing I read.

Instead I plan my days to avoid noise situations and if I get stuck then I put on my noise cancelling headphone over my ears.

My hearing is so sensitive though, I can hear animals moving around at night. We are fully double glazed and on the first floor!

  • ty....and ty for the explanation of quid... i just like how that word sounds... better than 'buck.'

  • a quid = 1 pound  its a bit like the word "buck" for 1 dollar

  • ty everyone...........  i'll have to consider the custom ones... i can wear ear plugs, or phones, for awhile, an hour or two. so i use them for that occasional need. if i had to wear them longer - like at work, i'd worry about germs, fungus, and just general discomfort. i did try the yanking my ears back when i cram (sorry, can't resist blunt force terms...) the ear plugs in my canals; seems to help,

actually. otherwise, i guess i'll use asmr stuff (sort of white noise) to drown out noise... i listen to asmr every night, but only cause it's soothing, i don't use it to drown out noise.

    happy non listening!

  • are you worried about being mugged or hit by a car, since you can't hear a thing? when i wear my phones, i am careful; but i'm aware i could slip up. i figure if i'm not careful, some car could wallop me. it happens even to the normal pedestrian.....you just get hit by a car, they drive off. to me, this is a real possibility -- if i'm not careful and mindful that i can't hear at all..........

i have always liked the term quid... i had to look it up --- wow, it's $12 usd!!! i thought quid would be a portion of a pound....

  • i sometimes wear them, then put on set of ear defenders with a built in radio at full blast. no more outside noise :)

just broke a nail damn !

  • i use rubber reusables ones ---- rubber cone shape that has 3/4 seals around it available on amazon/ebay 1-2 quid

They come in a plastic box. I put Baby bum cream (zinc) all over  them and store them in the box in my pocket.

Then when, needed the cream helps to get them in , create a really good seal, prevent infections, and they are easy to remove.

When u take them out, clean them, and recover in baby bum cream again

Good side effect : they keep ur ears clear of wax and infection

  • I use the cheap orange foam Screwfix ones - they feel a bit odd when you put them in but I can work all day and I forget they are there - especially if I'm working on my own and not having to listen to people speaking.

I use the cheap ones just so I can replace them often - they get icky after a few days with grubby fingers and a dusty environment..

  • Sorry for only partially referencing your questions as I can't talk too much to the ones you've asked about but I used to use foam ones though the foam ones make my ears really painful so I can use them once or twice but not regularly and I never tried the wax ones because I was about to get the ones I'm about to talk about through the business.

I don't know if this is inside your budget or something you interested in but specsavers so custom-molded ones, they do a custom mold of the ear canal and send them off to be made and you get a set of plugs that actually fit your ear.

I work with tools and such for my job and the sound of the power tools and I'm really sensitive to the sound so I have a pair of the industrial ones that I wear anytime I want to dampen the noise but I need to hear some stuff, such as tools and being on the street and a pair of sleep ones witch pretty much kill all but the loudest sounds, I don't actually use the sleep ones for sleep because I get super anxious if I can hear my blood flow but when im just at home trying to concentrate and in no danger, the sleep ones are great. I know they're expensive but I love them.
