NHS say no to adult autism diagnosis

Hello im Val

Ive been in and out of the mental health system since the age of 19, im now 50yrs young.

Any help given to me I get so far then its all pushed away.

I struggle to explain myself to them, the words never come.

, I fail to correct them so it all leads to a false image of me to them, they get angry they dont want to help anymore.

My sister wants me to be diagnosed for Autism, she sees a lot of autism signs, she knows a lot about it as her daughter is autistic.

NHS wont help, my Dr tells me to go private, i here it can cost thousands it just seems like a dead end for me.

Lockdown has in a way been a break from the pressures of life but yet im pushed into doing things that need done that cant be avoided.

Im mentally drained, lonely and lost.

I think I just want to be heard and understood just once and accepted for who i am.

  • I hate saying this, but have you thought of about contacting your local authority getting a needs assessment done, they cannot deny performing assessment. The assessment will result in a range of support and can help you pursue a diagnosis if their is a need.

Once a needs assessment is complete and believe their is a need not matter how small they can help arrange or direct you to autism social events or activities for your age group, help with accessing services including benefits, arrange appropriate mental health support.

your age isn’t an excuse for your GP to deny you an autism diagnosis in fact your age increases your need for a diagnosis as it can impact your quality of life as you get older.

the lack of funding isn’t an excuse and you have to put your foot down at your GP as it sounds like he has a lack of understanding or knowledge on autism to make that decision. A GP’s job is to refer and direct you to services and not gate keep you from accessing services.

  • i have to wait sixteen days before i can get a phone appointment with my Dr, I have had no response with the life story my sister had written either to my Dr.  I wish i had the support to help me get to where I need to be.

  • Blue is right. You don't need a diagnosis to pursue a Care Act assessment and a social worker would then advocate for you to have further assessment through speaking to your GP on your behalf. They won't be waiting 16 days to speak to the GP either because that is just ridiculous.

In the local authority I work for, a range of professionals can also refer for autism assessment and it includes social workers, so you may find you can access assessment in that way anyway.

  • I'm a social worker for adult social care and this isn't correct so you need to ring again.

Google the Care Act 2014 to find the specific criteria we use and see if you think you meet it.
