How long to wait for NHS assment?

Hi just over a year ago I went to my GP and said I think I am autistic and I want a professional assment. She agreed and refered me to who ever. I last asked about this in around October and was told that there was a note on my file aknowleging the request and they would be in touch is they felt I should have an assment. I know things ahve been difficult reciently but is this normal? Maybe because I have got to 51 they feel I don't need an assment? I have been very fragile since my dad died in April and have been on anti-depressants for months.  Anybody had recient experiences of NHS diagnosis?

thanks

Rob

  • I would chase it up i have had multiple referrals for my children over the last 10 years + and the gps have not sent or messed up so many times ,the last one i waited 18 months to get to triage ,Then was told already had diagnose so wouldn't get one. Even though last one said needed redoing in a couple of years and that was 4 years before.

  • I feel your pain there. It took 6 & 10 years to get my daughters diagnosed. I ended up moving area in the end because where I lived were seemingly incapable of diagnosing ASD & intent on blaming my marriage breakdown, which actually happened after my daughter had originally been verbally diagnosed with very severe ADHD & Aspergers by them. They often make these verbal diagnoses so you think you're getting somewhere & it won't be as hard as you've heard, then bang! They pull the rug out, do a U-turn & pin it on something else! If I could have that time again I'd pay for them to be dx privately. Good luck if you're still on this fight.
