Were my epileptic seizures actually meltdowns

I was diagnosed with epilepsy when I was 8 but not with ASD until I was 30, so is there a chance that some of my epileptic seizures may have actually been meltdowns or something autism related.

I realize we are not neurologists here (some of us might be?) but really I was wondering if anyone knew how similar an epileptic seizure might be to an autistic meltdown. And whether one could be mistaken for the other

Sorry I'm sure I got the lingo wrong. I'm fairly new to this.

    And also:

Thanks for that everyone. Only thing. That would mean I've never had a meltdown. Is that weird or is it pretty common to never have them?

I wad diagnosed with ASD in 2015 when I was 44, and have been having Psychogenic Non Epileptic Seizures since 1974 when I was 3 (which are stress induced) instead of having meltdowns in the standard behavioural sense of hypertensive emotional discharges (due to sensory overload).

  • I, like you, was diagnosed with epilepsy and only much later with ASD.

I do not think you can confuse the two.  I have had many meltdowns, and problems with sensory overload as I am sure many here have had.

I have also been unfortunate enough to have seizures.  While those observing may not know the different causes, as the seizures are of the absence type (usually), it is very clear to me and the experience is intensely different.

As part of the diagnosis you should have had an EEG done.  This makes the epilepsy diagnosis certain, and the results cannot be confused with a meltdown.

  • There is a possibility, my daughter was diagnosed with Reflex Anoxic Seizures as a child at about 2 yo, these are in appearance very similiar to epilepsy, nearly 3 years ago at 15 she was diagnosed with ASD, We were told recently that there may be a link between girls with ASD and certain types of childhood seizure. Apparently its still a maybe thing but Ras and Asd are both linked the vegus nerve part of the nervous system, so it does make you think there may be some type of link. Her seizures where triggered by sudden shock, fear etc.

  • I don't think so, I have a seizure disorder and you can definitely tell the difference between the seizure and an autistic shut down/melt down.

if you were diagnosed with an EEG then they would have seen the epilepsy in your brain waves. EEG interpretation is very accurate for epilepsy if you can get one when the person is having a seizure or pre/immediate post seizure activity.
