Stressed, worried that neighbour will be noisy again

The neighbour was really noisy last night (see other thread). I am worried there will be a repeat, and it is making me stressed, as if I were not stressed enough.

How can I reassure myself? The thing is, that uncontrollable noise makes me stressed. If I can control the noise, it is fine. If I know when it will start and finish, it is bearable. But if it can't be controlled, or it occurs at  an unacceptable  time, I get stressed.

  • I have the same problem, not so much at night, but from time to time, with one of my upstairs neighbours.

Particularly during the summer, when they'll have all the windows open, and they'll be talking loudly all day long.

Another of my upstairs neighbours (the one directly above me) has some kind of fridge/boiler/something that is a problem at night, because it switches on and off every 20 minutes or so, and the vibrations reverberate through my flat.

I've looked into using ear plugs, and have some I sometimes use when vacuming or when I put the washing machine on, however they're not very comfortable and shouldn't be worn whilst sleeping.

Another thing I've considered, but haven't looked into is white noise generators. These create broad spectrum random noise that the brain blocks out, so you can't hear it, but it interferes with, and blocks, external noise. I believe some hospitals use them. I do worry that I'd be able to hear it though.
