Autism Friendships

I was chatting with my autism specialist today and she confirmed something I’ve suspected for a while... people on the spectrum tend to get on better with others on the spectrum! I mean don’t get me wrong, I’m a social disaster on all levels, but I guess it would be nice to chat with people who share similar issues. The problem I have is that my interests are pretty niche - for example wildlife, aviation and history... not exactly the stereotypical young adult male interests. I’m guessing others share this problem... or maybe not. I dunno :-/

Not sure what I’m getting at but sometimes it’s good to just air your thoughts.

Parents
  • my nephew , who is autistic is also into Aviation. he has at the moment about 20 Radio Controlled  aircraft  of all sizes and engines. He has land and water versions..Many he has built himself. He also has drones and headsets where it is like he is in the drone.

I love talking to him about ww2 aircraft  etc and he often goes to crash sites which of course I could talk to him for hours about. He also goes to all big airshows in England ( his dad takes him ) and he takes 1000s of photographs of things I wish I could see.

His aim is to eventually build a microlight and fly himself. I told him the first step is to learn to drive. He just got his driving test  last month!

  • I’m the same with airshows - sadly all were cancelled last year. RIAT at Fairford and any of the Duxford shows are my favourites. Bournemouth and Eastbourne are good too in terms of free shows. I probably should find more aviation friends as going to airshows alone is far less fun.
