Video call (zoom, teams) exhaustion anyone?

Are others finding them selves in a state of shutdown if you do more than 3 hours in a day on video calls? This is becoming a serious issue for me with doing my job remotely.

That plus growing sensitivity to noise from household appliances!

  • I'm actually good with video conferences. I've grown a thick skin. It's other things that overload me sensory.

  • One tip, switch the view of yourself off, that reduces cognitive demand lots.

Second, I have it set so it focuses on the speaker, and then a row of the other people at the bottom of the screen. This helps me.

And NT friends of mine have been saying exactly the same, 3 hrs max, audio only where possible. A self employed NT friend has simply reduced her work day and income as she can't do many.

My first long meeting of 2 hrs back in April and I went to bed and fell asleep for four hours!

  • This is interesting, because I was seriously starting to wonder if the whole not being able to cope with video call was just me. I don't know if I have a shutdown exactly (new to all this) but after a video call I feel hollow - like my thoughts and feelings have all been put on pause, and I can't really compute anymore. I don't consciously worry about the calls I have to be on, but I've noticed I tend to get physically ill leading up to them. I mentioned this to a friend last week, who suggested a Zoom Christmas party, and she seemed to get offended, like the idea was preposterous and I had to be making it up and not being supportive.

  • I can't do video calls at all :) not only do freezes and lip sync going out cause me to shut down, my supporter has worked out I can't process information that way, I neeed the whole 3D view!

So I'm impressed you can manage 3hours, I can barely manage 10 minutes!  I think we lose more visual cues communicating this way which makes it very tiring.  At least with a phone call you are only trying to deal with the voice.

  • yea that would shut me down as well! I now attend routine meetings using voice only and that helps me quite a bit. Yes  I also a listening to the house more, its creeks, thuds, and appliances. Its a good thing to notice but not to get obsessed about. It an appliance is starting to get to you a good pair of noise cancelling headphones should be able to deal with them.
