Newly diagnosed

Hello Everyone,

Im new here so hope this is in the right place...

My son is 28, and has only just been diagnosed, even though weve always known, we were always just told 'he just has Learning disabilites'

So in one way im glad i now know, but in another i wish i didnt, its so much info to take in and i dont really know where to start :(   I was told to look on this site for help and support.

So if anyone else out there is in same situation it would be good to chat.

thanks for reading this. Poppy...

  • From what I have seen thus far, approximately 2/3 of users of this forum are ignorant but feel they are an expert.

You will already know the strengths and the obsession, these are good to help deal with anxiety etc. Such as I am obsessed with programming so take a laptop around with me to retreat into if things get too much.

The negatives, try asking him how uncomfortable he is with specific things, areas such as social anxiety. Social anxiety I personally have, yet feel completely fine communicating on the computer.

I admit I am no specialist, but these are the best peices of advice I can give, which is mostly common sense,  from experience.

I was diagnosed at 19/20. If you want more info on what to be wary of happening click here.
