Alcohol, caffeine and anxiety!

I’ve noticed recently that if I drink alcohol, and I mean 1 or 2 glasses of wine, a bottle of beer or two (not on the same night), my anxiety is increased the following day. Sometimes for a few days afterwards. I also think this happens with caffeine once I go over a certain amount.

Is this a thing for others or am just sensitive to it?

  • Before I bought the espresso machine (the cheapest delonghi with automatic grinding) we had more expensive ground coffee, and we made it with a French press.

Now I buy the cheaper beans to justify the investment of the machine. I always buy the heaviest burnt (highest level of torrification?) type of beans, so I think it's not so important what the quality is if you're nuking them anyways?

We also have an Italian moka-pot (Bialetti), that's also fun! to see that volcano bubbling up.

  • I’m getting the impression you like coffee! I do like a good coffee myself. Possibly a little bit more fussy about the bean combination and grind. I was lucky enough to work for Costa for about 3 years, so my aftershave of choice at the time was au-de-ground coffee!

  • You could say the link between my mind and caffeine is: I'm a bit anxious that one day they might stop producing coffee for the European market...

  • I drink once a week a full bottle of good red wine in one sitting. Then I feel a bit woozy, and the next day I feel a bit less smart, but I guess it keeps me going, it didn't increase in the last 5 years, so I'm not afraid of becoming an alcoholic. It's just my evening of (<control>/<alt>/<delete>).

Coffee, I drink about 8 espresso's a day. I bought a cheap espresso-machine about a year ago, and I don't think I'll ever go without. Especially now with the lockdown. I can drink an espresso and go to bed right after, and actually sleep... I would move to a place where I could grow my own plants iff they wouldn't sell coffee here in europe anymore. I also don't notice any difference between cheap and expensive beans, but the smell of freshly ground coffee powder is devine to me. I have the same with freshly ground pepper, wonderful.

  • I definitely get post-booze anxiety/low mood.  It’s a depressant and I have a history of depression so makes sense.  Caffeine in an accelerant so increases your adrenaline which is part of the fight or flight response responsible fo anxiety.  As we have a heightened fight or flight response as autistic people, the caffeine can elevate what for us is already high levels of adrenaline beyond the amount that is useful.

  • I don't like alcohol so don't drink - but I had to give up caffeine years ago because it was keeping me awake & stressed.       I had some cola a couple of weeks ago and forgot about the caffeine in it so spent all night wide awake & wired.  Smiley
