Autistic singers sought

Hello folks

I used to contribute here and hope it's OK to post a brief announcement or request.  There's an adult autistic choir that is currently recording a song by an autistic composer, and could do with more voices.  This is all done online, although before the current epidemic the choir mostly met in London.

The way these online choirs work (like the one Gareth Malone is doing in lockdown) is that you get an accompaniment or guide track which you sing along to while recording into a phone or other device. Then the various parts are stitched together and it sounds like a choir. Anyone autistic who would like to give it a try is welcome. If interested, please email contact@theautisticadultchoir.com.

  • This sounds like a lot of fun. Sadly I'm not close to London and I'm not able to sing so that rules me out :(

  • You can contribute to this project wherever you live, because choirs aren't gathering in their usual places at the moment.  How do you know you can't sing? I was always inhibited from singing, but liked singing along to things, and now realise I can at least 'hold a tune'. While I don't have a great range I can listen to recordings of my own voice and it's respectable and has its own character.  A few autistic people turn out to have 'absolute pitch', but not most. The great thing about a choir is it doesn't depend on one person. Not feeling able to sing isn't just an autistic thing: I think that's why Gareth Malone is trying to encourage everyone.

  • That's cool that you have a good voice, and that it has good character. I think it's incredible how many different unique voices there are out there and how many have been and gone. I love singing and music but it's not something I'm good at or feel confident doing. My voice is raspy and doesn't sound great when I speak but when I sing it's even worse. I haven't dared to record myself singing, it would probably break my phone.

I would love to sing but it's not something I am good at anymore so I prefer to just listen to others and enjoy.
