Odd Things

Hello!

I don't post very often here but I have a question. I often find myself doing things that other people may find strange such as:

I talk to my dog constantly when I am out walking her, this seem to keep me calmer than when I'm out walking alone. I think she gives me something to focus on.

I also do things such as walking on my tiptoes, bouncing on my tiptoes, talk to myself when doing something such as shopping, or figuring out where to go or which transports I need to use.

I watch the same movies and tv shows over and over again, I have a system where I watch certain things on certain weeks. For example, I watch Harry Potter on night-times in bed, on week 1 of the month, but I'll watch Bones during the day that week. Week 2 is Game of Thrones and NCIS. Week three is NCIS: La and Avengers. Week 4 is True Crime/Documentaries and maybes a few Horror movies I enjoy such as The Purge, Halloween, etc.

I also watch all movies and tv shows with the subtitles on even though I can hear just fine and get annoyed if anyone turns them off.

Are these Normal things or Autistic things? I am diagnosed with ASD but I have really just begun to notice some things. I also worry that other people find them odd, especially talking to the dog and tiptoe/rocking thing. And, also how to get others to understand that I have to do these things? I am an adult aged 22 and people do not think that Adults can have autism too. I hate feeling like I have to stop myself or explain all of the time to others why I do things.

Sorry if this all seems a little bit thrown together, but I'm trying to explain it the best I can.

Anyways, I hope everyone is calm and safe during the lockdown situation xx

(Also sorry the background is yellow, I'm dyslexic and can only read the words in this colour).

  • Hello Niamh. I do many of the things that you have listed.

I tend to run on my tiptoes, I don't even realise that I am doing it. My Mum calls me "Twinkletoes".

I have alternate film nights (When I can). I have a small selection of movies that I watch in rotation, Inside Out, Bolt, Hotel Transylvania and A Goofy Movie. I have very few nights where I can watch them by myself as I live with my parents. I also like to have a little drink when I am watching them.

  • Thanks for replying, it’s reassuring knowing that it’s not just me being weird. People don’t seem to understand why I do certain things. I don’t drink due to my medications I’m on too, but I don’t talk to anyone in the house usually, unless they approach me and ask me something, mainly because I’m scared I’m being too talkative or annoying. So I have time to myself.

it’s mainly the things in public that make me wonder whether people are looking at me as if I’m weird

  • Hi. I have repetitive habits with tv and more so DVD’s and movies. I have worn out many DVD players and to be honest surprised I haven’t worn the discs out! If I watch 1 film in a series I have to watch all of them and will watch them again many times over a period.

It’s the same in my car I will listen to the same cd for weeks on end before I decide to change it.

Believe me you are not alone.

  • You certainly are not alone.
the other thing I do is I subconsciously learn movie words.
I can walk In a room and if a film is on that I’ve seen I can name it within a few seconds most of the time. My parents stare every time I do it lol.
