Is it possible

Hi, I'm MusicalGoose. I'm 23 and have been on the spectrum since I was about 12 or 13 and over the years Ive developed a few hobbies. My main one is singing and music. I love music, listen to it all day every day and I love singing even more. To be honest I really want to be a singer. Ive lots of ideas and dreams which I've been thinking about over the last few years, I never think about anything else which can cause me to get stressed at times! I want to be a singer more than anything but I really don't know how to make it happen. I'm not especially outgoing but also I'm not sure if my voice is any good either. My family say it is but I don't know whether they're being kind or not. I've considered starting a Youtube but I'm worried in case of online bullying but also Im worried in case I fail and also in case I'm not very good. I've so many ideas and dreams but they all depend upon me being a singer, or making good money another way.

I've read before that some people with Aspergers can have special talents and I'm wondering if this is my special talent? And if it is do you think it's possible for me to make a professional singer or do you think it's a bad idea and I'm wasting my time? I really want to do this but I'm not very smart really and I don't even know what to do or where to start. But a lot depends on this, not just for me but my family as well as we're in a lot of turmoil at the moment.

  • Or invest in a Digitech Vocalist?   Autotune & harmonies in real time?  Smiley

  • I used to work In live music - specifically with emerging talent - so it’s a field I know a bit about. In honesty I would say that you are probably not bad at what you do as whilst family wouldn’t want to hurt your feelings, they also wouldn’t want to set you up to fail. That aside l, if you were terrible then you’d at least be able to hear it in yourself a bit. Obviously based on this  post I can’t say specifically how good you are, but my gut feeling says you could well be good. If you’d like to discuss how to progress in music, drop me a private message and I will give you sone pointers. Although I don’t work in music now, the principles are the same so I’d be happy to help.

  • Hi Musical Goose.

Have you thought about doing some singing exams or going to a music school? This might be an idea to help. Also, you could look online for any bands who are looking for singers and send them a link to your youtube page.

My daughter is also a singer and that is one of the options that she is thinking of.

    Best wishes on your journey.

  • Hi

There are lots of autie/aspie singers & performers out there - Gary Numan, Pip Brown from Ladyhawke etc.

What sort of music do you sing?       Are you into pop music or classical / opera?     If it's pop stuff, you're probably better off trying to get into a local group of some kind and go gigging for practice/experience and to get your image out there - and maybe earn a little cash too.     If you can manage this, you will soon get blunt feedback from the audience - good or bad.       If it's opera-type, then that's harder to get into purely because there's less opportunity - and those gigs normally go to someone who is classically trained from the 'right' background or stage school.

Do you have any other assets like playing an instrument or do you have a strong visual image?    Does the type of music you like have a strong following like metal or dance music?

If you're not very polished, Youtube can be just asking for abuse - even if you are amazing because lots of people get their fun by attacking people 'for a laugh'.      Why not try making the videos for just your friends and get them to honestly judge.        The music industry is notoriously harsh and cut-throat and there's no quick way into it - unless your uncle is Mick Jagger.    Smiley.

    Good luck!
