I think I have asbergers

  1. Hi, I'm new and wondered if anyone could help. I'm 43 and have strong suspicions I have undiagnosed Asbergers. After recent relationship problems I read up on Asbergers and, like many people the description seemed to describe my life from my earliest memories until the present day. As I'm undiagnosed, and possibly even dont have asbergers I'm very confused as to manage emotions. I'm waiting for a GP call to discuss a referral but my wife is struggling to understand it. She wants to speak to a friend about it which I would be happy with, however the friend is the wife of a good friend of mine! I just dont feel ready to share how I'm feeling and disclose very confidential info about me.....I've only just come to terms with what I suspect in the last 5 days! Is this bad of me to limit who my wife talks to about me? Any guidance would be most appreciated.

  • My advice is wait to speak to a GP and professional as whilst friends can be well meaning, their lack of clinical knowledge in the field could lead to misunderstandings. This relates to who you talk to, your wife is a different matter - if she feels she needs to chat to a friend you shouldn’t seek to limit that as it could be seen as controlling or coherence, maybe just politely ask her to focus the chat with her friend on herself, so talking about how living with someone with potential Aspergers affects her. It’s important to remember that she may be struggling to come to terms with this too. At the end of the day you don’t have to take to that friend about this nor do you have to follow up on any advice given if you don’t want to.

  • Hi there, you are in the best place to get advice. I have always come back to NAS for info. I was in a similar situation a few years back. I would suggest that you and your partner research the conditionSlight smile from reliable sources in the first instance to understand Asperger's, as it's quite varied and complex. When you have enough info. you can then make an informed choice about what is the best way Slight smileforward for you both. Be reassured, Asperger's is a biological difference in how the brain is wired, it is only a disability because most of society is wired another way ..... not better, just different. Embrace the strengths this condition brings and there are lots Slight smile
