ANYONE KNOW HOW ABOUT REDOING A UNIVERSITY DEGREE

During my time at university I didn't really receive the support that I should have had especially concerning the issue of Social Isolation and Social Communication difficulties that in a highly interconnected person centered world is a problem that far too many Autism sufferers struggle with. I wasnt diagnosed until 2 years into university and now I am trapped on benefits with physical disabilities developing also as I have characteristics of a condition called Marfans syndrome.

Well the consequence of not having received the support required was that I became disengaged from academic study and graduated with a simple BA Degree that was far below a bankable standard as to say possessing such a degree has prevented me from accessing further study such as a Master's degree qualification at many universities across the country. It has also prevented me from accessing civil service entry level occupations where a good quality degree is a necessity and many private sector employers have also discriminated on the grounds that the degree qualification is not of the acceptable standard. I find myself on UK Government social security benefits for disabled people because having a degree has prevented me from accessing unskilled work because of "Over Qualification" and higher level work because of the need for a 2:2 or above Honours Degree.
I didnt receive extra time in exams
Or specialist equipment
How does one go about starting again with the support ready from day 1
  • You might want to look at the Open University. Depending on how recent your first degree was, you should get credit exemptions for any relevant study in the past five years. Most universities have similar schemes, but the OU is particularly flexible.

  • I was undiagnosed for all three of my degrees, but maybe I muddled through, there were difficulties though, I should like yourself have got better grades, but I am fifty eight now. I maybe could have had a career, I ended up unemployed at 31, and never went into academia despite the Phd. I hope you get some resolution.

I too was overqualified for anything else, but these days I could go out and get some minimum wage job, they are, of course mostly awful, but better than long term unemployment in some ways, my shot in the dark suggestion for you, is to pick something minimum wage related to a hobby you have, a book shop, if you like reading, a camera shop if you like photography, you know the score, yes it is low grade and I when I was your time of life would have said Never, I did turn down jobs at call centres as the dole paid better, it really did, after travel costs etc, but work is work and it makes you look better to a potential employer, trying voluntary is a good idea, I worked in loads of charity shops and a gym for the elderly, no I never made money, but it was all worth it.

Sorry if this advice is all old hat but I wish you the very best and remember, you are young yet!

    Nick

  • Unless you're still very passionate about the specialisation. that you chose, I don't recommend redoing university again. I hope that you won't but the reality is that the chance you may get bored and drop out is rather high. As an alternative, I suggest you (Removed by Mod). There're different types of workshop, after each one you'll be given a certificate that may give grant you the opportunity to find a decent job

  • Hi

My daughter is just finishing uni so I've seen first hand what some people there have done - they've ended up failing completely - so have wasted 3 years and £50k.      But it's worse than that - in those 3 years, they could have earned £20k/year in minimum wage jobs - so in total, they are £110,000 down on where they could have been - and now they are 3 (or 4) years older with nothing on their CV.      Also, the £50k part is gaining interest at over 5% - that's compounded too!

What would be the economic impact of doing more education?     Would you be running up more debt and wasting more years to get more-or-less the same qualification?         How old would you be when you finish and would that age and no experience be more negatives for you?

I think you have to ask yourself what job you actually want and work backwards from there.      Would you be better off doing a completely different subject if you say you can't find work after gaining the qualifications you have?    Would you be better off doing some BTecs at a local college to flesh out your CV?
