Change

Hi, so i'm 18 and my Mental health nurse thinks it's a very string possibility I have autism but the waiting list is 18 months long for the formal diagnosis so she advised I seek support for it in the meantime. I'm really struggling right now. I left university because I couldn't deal with the socialising and the change. I'm unemployed. My dad might be moving away leaving me at risk of potentially becoming homeless and my relationship is struggling. Everything has changed and I want everything to go back to normal. i don't understand why change has to happen - espescially these changes. Like, a puffins beak changes colour in the mating season to help the puffins mate and keep their species live so that sort of change makes complete sense. Nothing in human life does. Why do people always over complicate things. I'm very stressed.

  • Dear NAS6641,

So sorry to hear that you are going through such a stressful time.  As you have started the diagnosis process, it might help to go through some of the information on our website about autism and the diagnosis process.  Try these links to What is autism? and Diagnosis.

If you'd like to speak to someone you might also like to consider contacting our Autism Helpline team who can provide you with information and advice. You can contact the team via telephone on 0808 800 4104 (Monday to Thursday 10am to 4pm, Friday 9am to 3pm). Please note that the Helpline is often very busy and it may take a couple of attempts before you get through to speak to an advisor. Alternatively, should you prefer to send a message, you can do so via their webform:
