Carers of severely non verbal autistic young adults

Hi

I am possibly going to care for a 19 year old young lady with severe Autism.

My own son aged 12 is going through the process of being diagnosed (highly likely that he is)and possibly ADHD so I have knowledge to a certain extent.

Are there any carers on this page that can give me any advice, this particular young lady can pull hair etc when highly anxious.  Mum is looking for 1;1 care 3 days a week of which I am very interested in and would like to find out as much as I can to help.  I am possibly going to be working alongside another carer and the mum to begin with until the daughter gets to know me and vice versa.  She has had a behaviour plan drawn up recently after lots of change in the last year.

I have never been a carer before although used to be a childminder, the young lady is non verbal and uses an app.

Are there any carers of autistic adults support groups about ?

Thank you

  • i just read a book written by a non-verbal. Its one of the best books I ever read. It is called "fall down 7 times get up 8". Each chapter is  2 pages because he wrote tt very slowly, letter by letter, but the communication of how a non-verbal sees, feels, and experiences is really eye opening.  It like a manual on what is going on in the head of a non verbal. The similarties between a non-verbal and the high functioning types of autism was quite striking for the likes of me

click on me i am a link to amazon uk to the book

i have lent my book to a parent/friend of a non-verbl so she can pick up some tips. But I am going to read it again, when I get it back.  It just contained good sound advice.

  • Thank you I will have a look at, I've read a few books 'The Reason I jump' by an autistic boy and 'Can you see me' about an autistic girl.
