Moved to a new shared apartment

Hello,

I am 30 years old and  recently diagnosed with Autism.

It is a month I have moved to a new shared student housing which I have a private room with shared common area/ bathroom/ kitchen.

I am so anxious to go out of my room and use bathroom or kitchen. It is been terrible with noises as well but I soundproofed my door two days ago. What can I do? Some days I can locked up in my room for 13 hours and it is painful for me.

  • I’m sorry to hear that you’re going through this. Is it anything in particular that is making you anxious? Have you tried noise cancelling headphones?

  • I had headphones previously, then this week I bought a better noise cancelling headphones.which are better.

Beside the noises I am afraid that I will see other people and they will start talking with me. I am really bad at small talk. This is preventing me from getting out of the room. All of this resulted in loosing my previous rituals and routines and that added to my problems.

  • Are there times when your flat mates are often out or asleep when it might be easier for you to go out of your room? How do you cope in lectures?

  • Yes, they usually wake up after me and I found out around 5 to 7 pm they are usually in their rooms. Thanks for pointing out that. My brain got shut down with the situation and really didn't know what to do. Now at least I can write those times to help myself.

Actually, duration of my education stretched a lot because of depression and adhd and anxiety diagnosis(which I believe those happened because I didn't know I am autistic). Now I only need to finish my thesis. But sadly changing house and conditions of living is a bit overwhelming. If I can continue my old routine and form new ones which they fit into my new situation then it can save me.
