Dealing with school issues

Hi everyone,

Does anyone else here have a child who also has SEN? I find confronting school about issues around support so stressful and draining. Last year I just let everything get bad because I had so much on my plate but this year I was determined to ensure my child is receiving the support she needs.

It's been awful. I've had to complain about certain staff members (who treated my daughter awfully), have had multiple meetings and phone calls, and things are still terrible for my child.

It really feels like most staff members see support as an optional extra.

Anyway, I am completely exhausted and drained. Anyone else found any ways of making it easier?

Parents
  • Most staff do not have proper training. Is it primary or secondary? Unfortunately the ones whose parents shout loudest and longest get the help.

  • Primary. Policies aren't followed, professional recommendations aren't carried out... everything is like pulling teeth and each new year the fight starts again. This year we have a particularly awful teacher who refuses to listen to anything.

I definitely agree on your last comment. The most intimidating parents always get their own way. We're trying to just keep complaining until it's less hassle for school to just do it's job.

With hindsight, I've been far too trusting, assuming that when someone agrees to do something they will actually do it. Been lied to a lot.

Children
  • It very much feels that in the last few years more and more parents are being forced into home educating as the system isn't working and causing mental health problems for their children. It's very sad. As you say, some teachers do get it and care, others just focus on scores and league tables.

  • It's so sad but it seems to be true in so many schools . Children's experiences of school depends so much on their teacher. Some teachers get it and others just don't. Unfortunately in primary schools children are stuck with the same teacher all year.

It's also all about time and money. Lots of sencos don't have much of ether when there are so many children with so many needs.

The government has got its inclusion policy all wrong. So much more could be done if they could pay for schools for our children full of staff that understand them and can tailor the curriculum around them.

Instead they put them in with 31 other children , some others who may have other needs and then watch them sink. They fail to thrive and their parents face sending an unhappy child to school everyday because the government says we have to.
