I had these feelings when I was a teenager. It was from feelings of inferiority and being bullied.
I got better when I changed my thinking, and how I looked at the situation. Instead of feeling like the outside world was seperate and something to fear, I believed that it was something I "owned" and was in my control -- I felt ownership and pride in walking the streets, as if I belonged on them.
I then stopped looking down, hands in my pockets and fearful, but straightened my back and felt more powerful. People, especially in cities, are too busy to take notice of you, they want to get to where they are going. You do your thing, and they will do theirs.
It takes time, but you will get it.
