Eccentric dress style

Do many of you have an eccentric dress style?

People they see me in my corduroy trousers, button-up shirt, camel coat and fedora hat and give me dirty looks, stare and make aggressive body movements. I in turn become nervous sometimes and start pacing or looking all around, then have to leave an area and go somewhere else. I could dress as casually as most people but wouldn't feel right.

I find most conversations and interactions with people too informal for my taste so dressing more formally is my way of signalling to people I don't do modern casual informal conversations well.

  • I began wearing a metal key chain like a medallion. Whenever I wear a black t-shirt, I resemble Bobby George the old Darts Pundit.

  • I think I do have a fairly unusual dress style - and have gone through various different phases throughout my life of different styles.

in my late teens I was obsessed with Victorian literature and imagery so I tried to find clothes that evoked Victorian style.
I remember my ancient grandfather died and he had a load of those Victorian style long johns and button up vests etc - like Victorian men’s underwear - and I started wearing those round the house - I must have looked pretty odd in them now I look back on it!
i then got into gothic imagery so went quite Goth - sort of mixing the two.
When I left college I got really into hiking and cycling and got really obsessive about technical gear for on the mountains and camping in the outdoors - so got into very functional clothing and technical clothing. I had to wear cotton underneath the tech gear though because I don’t like th3 feel of those polyester fabrics against my skin.

In recent years I’ve got really into Indian Block Print dresses - either vintage or new - because they are the most comfortable thing ever to wear. I can only wear pure cotton directly against my skin - so they’re ideal - and they are loose and free flowing. Lovely. I love all the different prints and colours. I try and buy things made with natural dyes that don’t harm the environment.

I only ever wear plimsolls or Dr Martin’s boots - or wellies if it’s wet. Never never NEVER high heels!

I also have a thing about socks - if I find a type of socks I like I buy loads of them all the same. I love chunky, soft, cosy socks.

I like big cosy jumpers and cardigans too. I only ever wear really comfortable, loose clothing - I can’t bear anything close fitting. I never wear a bra because I’ve come to the conclusion that there is no such thing as a comfortable bra. I’ve done a lot of research on this and never found one.

  • My dressing style is not eccentric to my mind, but I sometimes do not care so much about my appearance, and people might find it weird. I mean, I can wear the same clothes during the entire season. I wash them, but the general style and colors do not change much, which causes the people to ask me if I have some other clothes or if I need some help. I just wanted to say that I’m fine. I just don’t feel like changing something about my appearance today, tomorrow, and the following weeks.
However, it doesn’t mean that one day I won’t just put on a colorful dress from Bella Barnett and go for a walk. One day I might. One day, but not today.

  • I don't have *much* of an eccentric dress style, though I want that more and more as I age.

I haven't worn a shirt and/or tie to work since I went sick in Oct 2017, and I'm now sitting here in fluorescent green trainers, purple jeans, a Christmas jumper over what I can only describe as a 'blouse print T-shirt', and green-framed specs. So I'm trying :-).

Partly I've been fighting one thing that gets me really annoyed about clothes shops; the "women's" section is full of pattern and colour, then if you step into the men's you have to wade through a sea of various shades of charcoal, beige and navy.

BTW anyone who knows me in real life will now know who I am!

  • Ha! I used to get so much flak from family as well as work for being too Goth, well just last night I was told someone was worried my black outfit might frighten the younger children at a school I am subbing at.

  • I was once advised to dress for the job I wanted rather than the job I had. So here I am sitting outside HR in my batman outfit wondering where it all went wrong...

  • Not really. I don't care what anyone else wears either, they are just clothes. People can wear what they like, it's the person that matters. It's not really a priority when I meet someone.

  • It's fine to be you. Give yourself permission. The way you dress sound's great

Don't worry about what others think..life's too short

Have you thought about take my up writing and joint Ng or forming s writers group .Be s good way to meet other educated people

  • Thank you DC, much appreciated the upvote.

    take care.

  • If we are upon the subject of walking around "In the Nip"...?

...Here in London, again even in winter, if a person walked about in the Buff, no-one would care, but some would "giggle"... and in these days of SocialMedia, those same would say nothing, take a Snapshot, and then next say an awful lot upon thier InstaTwitFaceTube- Site(s)...

...But the Police would arrest the person for an "indecency".

But! - If said person had their gender-appropriate Private Parts covered, then the *only* difference which would occur, is thier not being arrested... (!)

...This is how fashions are started, regardless of Weather and consequences... Meh.   :-|

  • As long as you don't walk  around outside in your birthday suit.  Anything is acceptable.

  • ...This is <> myself... although I am Female, and the Fedora is a FlatCap. In Winter (now!), a Waistcoat is necessary, and in Snow, a Trenchcoat or something heavy... Also, being physically allergic to coloured Dyes does not help much...(!)

( Beware:This is a Rant! If I myself were to dress like the majority where I 'live', then I would always be wearing a 'Bare midriff, Hoodie, plus two children'...(even in Winter)...! End of Rant! )

...But, generally for myself, my own Skin is seen as 'eccentric' and a target, hence the "Cynosure" part of my UserName.

Make of all of that what you will, anyone...    :-/

  • Hello,

yes, I do dress differently to others and I get the same treatment as you which is not nice. It is chilly here today and so I wrap up well with a base layer and a few layers to keep me warm and top off with a trapers hat which always gains comments but I prefer to keep warm. What gives others the right to dictate what you should wear? We are all individuals so please be your self and do not give in to such bad treatment.

  • I dress like this old bloke. People often assume I'm a farmer. Kevlar fabric mimics tweed.

  • .............................

  • Clothes help define the persona you wish to project.

Although most of the time I dress fairly casually (or at least what I consider to be casual), I sometimes deliberately wear clothes that I know will make me feel more confident or acceptable in a difficult social situation.

It's funny, despite common sayings like "Don't Judge a Book by it's Cover", unless they know you quite well, people almost always base their first impressions of you as a person on your appearance. I've actually found over the years that even people who do know me quite well, often fail to recognise me if I change my style of dress or appearance, which just shows how little attention to detail people often have of their surroundings. This doesn't happen quite so often nowadays though, as I have a distinctive bushy white beard that makes me look like Santa (hence my username). Bizarrely though, this goes too far the other way & I often get mistaken for other people, who presumably are also mainly recognised from their facial hair.

Wear whatever defines your personality & makes you feel comfortable. Your style of dress sounds fine to me though Smile.
