way to get help for suspected adult autism

(VERY LONG SORRY)

hi I'm about 80% sure I have autism /add for a while now through seeing by chance some videos here and there on social media sites and it was enlightening to see because for the past 15 or so years I've been walking around wondering what is "wrong" with me... after seeing these videos I digger a little deeper and found nearly if not all symptoms basically describe me and my struggles that come with autism. wondering why the world reacts to me in certain ways etc. I feel depressed, no self esteem anxiety which I feel have been bought on because i went so long without a diagnosis and becoming more and more alienated from the world I'm in a bit of a hole. something was picked up when I was a child (discalculia) but i feel now this was a misdiagnosed

I have been to my gp and a referall was sent, the first time they got me in contact with mind, (the mental health chairty) but after a telephone assessment with them it seems they basically can't help with what I need

2nd attempt I had a referall sent to the maudsley hospital which came to nothing haven't heard anything back for months now...

is there any other paths I can't take to get help other than private? I'm thinking more and more about ending it all but as soon as j mention depression my gp thinks that's what the problem is and then I'm treated for depression rather than what is the root cause to my pr9blems,which is the autism itself. after enough saving I can afford private but then I'm so worried that they will tell me I don't have it I've heard people go for an assessment be told they don't the first time they then try again and be told that in fact they do have autism.  thanks for any help

  • You have my sympathy on this. I am also in a similar situation. I have had a lot of problems all my life and even had people suggest there was something "wrong" with me. I already had to wait many years to be independent from my parents (because I don't think they will support it), and it just made getting an assessment harder because many clinics require parental input. I have actually asked for an assessment a long time ago, and I had to do it a second time, because in the first time, the process was lost mid-way by the assessor. I waited for a long time for a mail, and since I never received one, I began to think she didn't treat me seriously. It was hard being treated that way, and I worried about a second rejection. It took me almost another year to have the courage to ask again, though the documents weren't loss this time. I called the clinic during the process to monitor that things were on track. I had already waited for almost two years because of their processing mistake. And when I called recently, they told me that the current waiting list is 2-3 years.

I would suggest following up with your referral with maudsley hospital (ask the GP if they had sent the referral - mine took a month to be sent out. Then try to contact the services the follow. Telephone is very useful in these cases, as people seem to ignore emails a lot). Could you tell us a bit more about your telephone assessment with MIND? I had an initial assessment with them to before being referred by them to the clinic, maybe there were some misunderstandings there, and it would still be possible for you to try again?

I have thought of going private as well, since it's been so long and painful to wait. It was impossible for me a few years ago as I didn't have any money. But since the NHS wait is in units of "years", it is possible to save enough after a few years. If you save just an extra £30 a month, after 3 years, you would have £1080. Since I had been saving for this just in case I needed it, I do have the money now, but it seems like such hard work to earn money, I don't want to throw it all away for a negative result. So I'm still undecided about going private. But I think if you can save a bit more, perhaps it would feel like throwing less away (e.g., if you put aside £60 a month for 3 years, you will have £2160, and you will only be needing to spend half). It might also be a good idea to read through the forums to find out from the people who had really positive and helpful private assessments where they did it. If you can go to the same clinic as they did, you may have the same kind of understanding and thoroughness.

  • thanks and hello, yeah I remember the very first referall I did was sent off and the replying letter I later found out was sent to my old adress for some weird reason so I don't know what that would have been (kicking myself still coz that could have been the one, I rang the maudsley tofay and got told to.ring back at an earlier time tomorrow for referall info, as for the parental input I was diagnosed with something called discalculia because my teacher and parents noticed something was up,but feel it was misdiagnosed because the symptoms of those can be similar to adhd and autism but it looked at in an academic way rather than a personality way,

following a second referall.is where mind came in like the referall my doc sent was to another service who then asked me loads of questions then following that they referred me to mind but I think they took to much time looking ant the depression and feelings of suicide so the autism was.overlooked and they just said they can't help me for autism coz they're not qualified for it.  but I will try again from what you told me thanks for that :)

I've just tried another place can't remember the site now but you fill out an nhs funding form which they then send to your gp and they get back to you letting you know which is good here's hoping

but with money again every penny really.does count for me at the moment literally can't save haha
