Job applications, what to disclose

Yes, I've had several jobs that involved bringing things back from the brink of disaster. Unfortunately because my work involves people not technology it wears me out quickly! 

Me too. I get knackered in social situations but thrive amongst chaos and disaster - where clarity of thought and technical ability are all that matters.

How interesting - this is the same for me. I cope well with extreme, unpredictable behaviour from some of the people I provide a service for, but day to day social interaction with colleagues and managers is incredibly challenging. 

I'm good at masking.  And it takes a few days for people to realise that I'm different. 

When NTs talk to me.  There is always a slight delay as I process trying to work out what they are really saying.  95% of the time I get it right.  Such as sarcasm, double meaning, jokes, opposite of what's being said, idioms,. 

What gives me away is that I find normal social situations challenging.  But situations that normal people find difficult. I find calming and easy to deal with, such as psychotic clients talking to themselves. Or having a meltdown and shouting.

How "noticeably autistic" are you?

It's quite hard to say what the best approach is. With hearing loss I apply and do the interview without disclosing, then disclose if offered the job. I think I will carry on doing that if I get an autism diagnosis as well. 

On the other hand you may be able to get a guaranteed interview if you do disclose, and you can also ask for adjustments to be made at interview. It really depends on what works best from your perspective. 

You would have many strengths in the support worker role as you are so encouraging and supportive to other people in this online community.
