Virtual Jukebox

Today I've been relaxing by playing music I listened to in the past (my youth!)

Here's one such song (Supertramp: Logical Song) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ukKQw578Lm8

Do reply with a song you liked listening to... we can turn this thread into a virtual jukebox!

Parents
  • On the turning away
    From the pale and downtrodden
    And the words they say
    Which we won't understand
    Don't accept that what's happening
Is just a case of others' suffering
Or you'll find that you're joining in
    The turning away
    It's a sin that somehow
    Light is changing to shadow
    And casting it's shroud
    Over all we have known
Unaware how the ranks have grown
Driven on by a heart of stone
We could find that we're all alone
In the dream of the proud
On the wings of the night
    As the daytime is stirring
    Where the speechless unite
    In a silent accord
Using words you will find are strange
And mesmerized as they light the flame
Feel the new wind of change
On the wings of the night
    No more turning away
From the weak and the weary
    No more turning away
    From the coldness inside
Just a world that we all must share
It's not enough just to stand and stare
Is it only a dream that there'll be
    No more turning away?

  • Wonderful lyrics - we need more protest songs now, like there used to be back in the 1960s...

  • I think music of now is quite insipid. Exactly what do Adele and Ed Sheeran stand for? I believe our last true icon was Amy Winehouse. I saw the Stones earlier this year and they gave their everything for 2 hours. Yes it was a bit like grandad dancing but it was a complete entertainment show. Todays artists have a lot to learn.  Im 33 so dont have my finger on the pulse anymore but i think uk grime is going against the grain like punk did.

Not grime. The sense of despair in this song sums up this age.

  • This song is incredible - I've never heard it before and the video is brilliant too! Thanks so much for sharing this.

As you say I am sure there is protest music out there somewhere - I must broaden my music listening habits and try and find it.

  • Depeche Mode have come a long way.  I remember when they started, back in the late '70s.  'Just Can't Get Enough' and 'New Life' were songs I loved.  I never thought they'd last as long as they have.  They took a stand against Live Aid in 1985, which earned them some criticism.  Tears for Fears did the same, I think.  But I admired that stand.  I think they made an important point.

  • You cant beat a bit of Mick Jagger!

Ive just watched this video. Crikey she has got a good pair of lungs! The live show translates well onto youtube. Thsnk you Martian Tom for taking me back to earlier this year. Ive had an awful year but seeing them was one of the positives.

  • Well said about commercial pop products.  Amy was an icon, yes.  I like the Merry Clayton cover.  And here's my favourite version of the same tune - by the lads themselves!
