More meltdowns

Hi

I was diagnosed as being Autistic I.e Aspergers and since then I have had lots of meltdowns.  Is this unusual?

  • Hi, Creek.

This is something I've experienced myself, and more severe or noticeable autistic traits seem to be reported quite often by people who are recently diagnosed. As tfw7 said, part of this is probably that you're more aware or self-conscious about your autistic traits, or are hiding them less. Also, diagnosis can leave us with a huge number of unanswered questions rattling around inside our heads, especially if we're late diagnosed and have a lifetime of baffling experiences that we want to look at again from our new perspective. This can put quite a strain on our minds as we work through everything and come to terms with the diagnosis, so might lead to lower tolerance for other stresses for a while, and so more melt-downs or burn-outs.

  • greater awareness can lead to what seems like a rise in symptoms, but could well just be you not suppressing them anymore
