Marmite - Love it or hate it?

Morning all...

Did someone mention Marmite on the "Breakfast" thread yesterday? ;-)

My favourite Marmite combos are...
Marmite and peanut butter on toasted wholegrain.
Marmite and cucumber on crusty white farmhouse.
Cheese and Marmite, any sliced bread, made in the Breville sandwich toaster....
I'm drooling already ;-)    How do you eat yours?

  • She seems to enjoy it - at least more than not.  Very strange individual lol

  • Hi Mr T

    I can totally relate!

I have 2x occasional shopping chaperones and have recently completed my first ever online supermarket delivery shop...wooo-hooo! I'm such a dinosaur when it comes to technology...staff helped me several times to get set up and now I can buy anything!!!! No crowds, no noise, no tills beeping, no high aisles making me feel claustrophobic etc....

Maybe that could be an option for you too occasionally? It'd keep your Marmite supplies up ;-)

Or does your other half actually enjoy supermarket shopping?

  • Those were the days, eh? Your reminiscing takes me back to the hot Bovril drinks vending machine which my sister and I used to reward ourselves with after our weekend swimming.... mmmm-mmmmmm!

  • Personally I love it.  Unfortunately, my wife does the shopping (I get really bad anxiety issues in crowded supermarkets) and, because she hates the stuff, she never buys it!

  • Of coarse crumpets,,lashings of butter melted and marmite on top,,,slurp.......

marmite and some oxo cube in hot water,, nice warming drink in winter,,,yum,,,,

  • Damn it. Gave in and had to have Marmite on toast.

  • A spoonful of it makes spaghetti bolognese really rich (for us non-veggies of course)

But my personal favourite: buttered crumpet with marmite. Mmmm got to go and eat something now!!

  • Mmmmmmmmmm Marmite, I bloody love the stuff and now my mouth is watering just thinking about it!

Buttered toast is a personal favourite, but it makes a mean cottage pie or casserole when you mix it into the stock!  I also use it to flavour fake meats (I'm vegan) and despite my partner not liking Marmite, he does prefer fake mince meat when I have seasoned it with a tad of Marmite - not that I would tell him that as he hates it.

  • Marmite and dripping in white uncut bread, for the younger of you dripping is the thick lard type fat you got after cooking meat on a Sunday. You don’t get it much now as most meat is injected to bulk it out and preserve it.

So take the dripping out of the fridge and spread thickly on bread which has marmite already spread onto it, no butter..

Times were hard so improvisation was key. Never complained once, food was food.

As a kid with not much food available marmite and oxo in a cup of hot water was great especially if stale bread was dunked into it to soak, lashings of proper salty butter of coarse,

These days marmite and cheese on toast.

    nothing else mixed with marmite.

  • I'm a fellow purist. Why would anyone want to adulterate something so perfect? I just don't understand it! Laughing

  • Hi BT,

What a wonderful story! I feel all Christmassy already... despite the current temperature in Portugal and view of palm trees and swimming pool from my balcony ;-)

Doh, I've made it all about me again...

Hope you are enjoying your day.

I'm missing Marmite out here... they dunno what they're missing!

    A x

  • I love marmite, for years as a kid my mum used to buy me a little jar to go in my stocking at Christmas and I just used to dip breadsticks in it. I largely like it unadulterated with just butter (I can't imagine trying it with peanut butter...)-marmite on toast is just the moorish thing ever-but cheese and marmite is a classic. A cheese and marmite toastie for lunch is part of my weekend routine.

  • I think I will have to take your word on that!

  • Sweet, tangy, creamy and crunchy...taste and texture explosion! I love it :-)

  • Haven't had it for a few years now, but marmite, peanut butter, cream cheese and iceberg lettuce in a baguette is delicious.

  • Thought my partner was the only person to mix marmite and peanut butter! Personally I prefer the classic boring cheese combo and given half a chance my daughter would eat it with a spoon.

  • You'd be surprised how many doctors say that to me.
