What to tell employer about recent diagnosis?

Hello? I’m new here! Can anyone help? I finally received an ASD diagnosis last week (in my 40s, but think that’s far from unusual for women). It’s a massive relief and pretty much explains everything. But the issue:

So I told my boss, and they’d like some info about ASD in women to help them understand? I’m a bit stumped because I can’t find something concise that sums it up - and explains the positives as well as the challenges. I’m quite ken they get both sides obviously. I have loads of info (I may have got a little obsessive about this recently... ) but I can hardly give them a whole pile of books! Also because I’ve been pretty good at masking (hence all my mental health problems...) I think they do need female specific info.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks so much for your help

  • I'm also female 40s just diagnosed. I was given a letter by my pysch to give to my employer detailing issues, help etc. Do you have anything similar? My most helpful book I've read was Cynthia Kim "Nerdy shy". She also has a blog here https://musingsofanaspie.com/about/ which I'm sure will have some relevant bits for you that you could copy.

  • Thank you tfw7. Yes I read her book, I thought it was the most helpful thing I’ve read too. TMI for my boss though! I hadn’t realised she had a blog too, thanks for that -will have a look.

How long ago did you get you diagnosis? Although I expected it, it still feels very strange to me. I’m not sure if you can be shell-shocked if you were expecting the shell to land?

  • I was diagnosed 3 months ago, so still getting used to it. It didn't come as a surprise, I was happy with it, but even so, everything post diagnosis feels different somehow.

Fortunately my boss has been very supportive, both before and after diagnosis. Especially actually the before i getting me to open up and talk about things. I also wrote him (I find writing much easier than talking) a list (long and quite personal) of all the things that helped me/didn't help etc. He said that was really helpful. We've subsequently talked it through as well. Doesn't mean he still doesn't so the things that annoy me, but at least now I feel better saying "you know I don't like that" etc
