New late diagnosis

Hi,

I am Jaime and I was diagnosed with Autism last week, I am 59, and I’m in a spin and it’s all very new to me.

long story short, I thought I was just weird etc, and ended up being diagnosed last week, I don’t really know the terminology so apologising in advance if I get it wrong, I got some high scores so that must be a plus for something! I don’t really understand what they have said though and some things are wrong.

Not really sure what to do now to be honest, when I was told I checked the credentials of the person giving it, very highly qualified and sure she hadn’t made a mistake. It felt like millions of jigsaw pieces that are my life all clicked together and everything made sense. However, next day it was crash and burn, I couldn’t think, speak, sleep. I’ve recovered a bit but I’m really confused and I just don’t know what I do next, so here I am, you are on my list of resources so any comments welcome and thank you for listening.

  • Hi Jamie,

I have been recently diagnosed with autism too over the last week. Welcome to the confusing and lonely part is what I call it. You’ll find that a lot of people feel the same way about a diagnosis. I still am trying to figure it out, I’ve had a lot of advice from people on here and it can be very helpful!

its totally normal to spiral even in every day life, I’ve been spiraling too, thinking about the past, and now what to do it’s very overwhelming. But the best thing I can say (and still learning) taking baby steps. I like to read new information every day (not all at once) about the diagnosis and all the sub groups and guidelines on how to help and move forward in life.

please give your self some grace and patience and it can be a slow process to understand everything. I’m not on that path yet but I’m trying. Keep your head up, your not alone here.
