Awaiting assessment

I’ve recently been referred for an autism assessment by my GP, I’ve suspected I’m autistic for a long time (since I was 16, I’m now 25). It’s taken me a lot of courage to finally contact my GP and they’ve been great, I’m just now awaiting to hear back regarding an assessment. But now I’m thinking is it just a big waste of my time and their time? What happens if I’m not autistic and I don’t have any answers or closure as to why I’ve silently struggled the whole of my teenage and adult life ? I feel somewhat like a fraudster, like I’m making up all the struggles I’ve faced and continue to.
On the outside, I feel I come across quite ‘neurotypical’. I’ve worked since I was 15 in multiple different jobs and currently work full time 9-5. I moved out at 17/18 and had my own flat, I drive (but it did take me 3 years to pass and my first instructor asked if I was autistic lol) I went to college and got A*s then uni and achieved a 2.1, did this alongside working full time. But I’ve had several friends, family members and teachers tell me they think I’m autistic, I was just never supported so I’m now chasing my own diagnosis. But did anyone else feel like this in the run up their diagnosis ? I feel I’m ’not autistic enough’ ): but every day im exhausted !

  • Thank you !! I’ll have a look at that website :) I have started forming a mental list of things / traits but the self doubt is just overwhelming sometimes!  I think that’s why I put off tryna peruse a diagnosis for so long incase I’m wrong

  • Have you done any of the tests on Embrace Autism website? They might give you a better idea, I think I did each one regularly for months to reassure myself I was doing the right thing by going for assessment. I am recently diagnosed but the assessor said I check every symptom on the DSM for autism. I really notice now how much it affects me every day and it very thing I do. Could you write down the things you think are autistic behaviours that you do? Self doubt is something I definitely had.
