Advice on starting ADHD medication for my AuDHD daughter (with PDA)

My 9-year-old daughter (turning 9 soon) is AuDHD with a strong PDA profile. She’s been struggling severely at school and is showing clear signs of burnout. I believe it may be time to try ADHD medication, but my wife is less convinced.

We saw our GP about six months ago and were told we’d be contacted by the paediatrics department—but we never heard anything. Our daughter has already been diagnosed twice (privately and through the NHS) and has an EHCP in place.

My question: If we decide to pursue medication, how do we actually get the process started?

Any advice on next steps—especially with the NHS system—would be hugely appreciated.

  • Dear Rob79,

Thank you for reaching out to the community. It sounds like you are all trying to support your daughter through a difficult time whilst she is struggling at school and dealing with burnout. I hope that the community can help support your family.

The online community can't give medical advice but are welcome to share their experiences of autistic burnout, ADHD or PDA that may be beneficial to you.

As Bunny has said the GP is the best place to go regarding medical concerns and we would advise to seek guidance from them.

I have also included some of the NAS advice and guidance pages that might be worth taking a look at:

It could also be helpful to look at ADHD in children and young people - NHS

I know these links do not directly answer your question but I hope some of the information on them is helpful to your family.
