Daughter 8 diagnosed with ADHD/ASD should we try medication?

Hello All,

So my lovely 8 year old daughter (officially diagnosed ADHD/ASD) is becoming increasingly difficult to deal with, not that there's ever been an easy stage but lately things have really escalated.

She's often angry, always demanding and unreasonable. My wife and I are fairly anti-medication but recently I'm starting to see the appeal and possible benefits, I figure what do we have to lose by giving something (possibly methylphenidate) a chance.

can anyone with any similar situation share their experience, thank you.

  • You asked "should we try medication?".

The rules here don't allow us to offer medical advice to each other, other than to recommend discussing this with her GP or other health professionals involved in her care - which I definitely suggest you do.

We are allowed to share our experiences, which someone might do. However, perhaps it might be worth also asking for feedback on similar experiences in a space that's more specifically focused on ADHD?

For example, ADHD Aware is a UK charity that runs a peer support group for parents of children and young people with ADHD. It takes place every second Tuesday of the month via Zoom:

ADHD Aware - Parents of Children and Young People with ADHD Support

Other resources that might be worth exploring include UK-focused, ADHD-specific Facebook groups (eg search using "adhd children uk" and filter for "Groups") and online forums.
