GP was dismissive

Hi

After filling in forms for the GP I finally saw someone today to ask for a referral to be assessed for autism.

She told me that I might be autistic and will refer me but also said "you can't be that bad because you've got a husband, children and a full time job".

I got the referral which is what I wanted but now I'm second guessing myself after she said that.

  • Some of them can be very dismissive, I was told that it didn't matter if I was diagnosed as "there's no treatment anyway" and since I'd made it into my 50s without being identified as autistic was there really a need to be assessed!

I've had a lifetime of what I now know is treatment resistant depression and anxiety which ultimately led to my autism diagnosis. Those things haven't gone away but now at least I have a reasonable idea what's behind it all.

  • I am in same situation . I was put on antidepressants 18 years ago , treatment never worked , finally diagnosed ASD/ADHD . GP not willing to change medication and pushed me to find a psyciatrist who start new treatment that will help with ASD/ADHD symptoms
