PTSD symptoms in daughter

My daughter is 13 and autistic, they still have severe trauma symptoms if they see anything school related which has stopped them from being educated for years....they went to camhs bit all they did was ask her trauma trigger questions so we stopped the assessment...the local authority are pushing for evidence for pstd,  if I pay for a private assessment will they have to be fully qualified for autistic children who have trauma?

My child has an EHCP and EOTAS package now but needs a clinical psychologist can anyone recommend one please

  • I can (imagine) how this situation has arisen - but unfortunately it would appear that you are now in a position where you've got to provide evidence and there currently isn't any.

You could try going back to CAMHS incidentally, and explaining why you didn't like the previous approach - although they aren't there specifically to diagnose, but to identify triggers and to mitigate.  If you'd persisted though, it would have been on record and they could have referred on.

You could certainly see (any) private psychologist and obtain a PTSD diagnosis, but as you seem to point out - the local authority may then question if this psychologist had particular experience with traumatised persons with ASD.  Or they may not.   PTSD is PTSD to a certain extent.

You could try using the NAS autism services directory for an appropriate psychologist in your area.

  • Thanks for this advice I will search for a clinical psychologist who has the expertise with autistic children and hopefully get her PTSD diagnosed as she definitely has it as still has flashbacks and nightmares and avoids mentioning anything to do with it
