Help getting my 19 yr old assessed in our area

Hi we are a newly self-diagnosed autistic family and I am looking to get my 19 yr old daughter a formal diagnosis to get her support for university. We live in the Bristol area and are willing to pay to get it done qucker than the NHS but I want someone who knows how to diagnose autistic women, can recognise a good masker! Any recommendations would be very welcome or bad experiences to avoid, please. I am so stuck, I can't do the telephone and autistic inertia has meant we have procrastinated all summer holiday and time is running out before her course starts! Thank you

  • I can recommend getting a diagnosis via Sara Heath. She will conduct a prediagnostic assessment (She is very experienced in diagnosing autistic women and is also autistic herself), she will write a report and if she thinks your daughter is autistic, she'll be able to have an appointment with a consultant psychiatrist who will conduct an assessement and can give a formal diagnosis. The good thing is that the consultant psychiatrist also has experience diagnosing for the NHS so the diagnosis is fully recognised. I was diagnosed via this route (in part as I was moving countries too much to ever make it to the end of a waiting list) and I had a very positive experience - as Sara is autistic herself, it was also really nice to talk to someone who understands. It was quite affordable and the good thing is that if she does not think your daughter is autistic then you only need to pay for the prediagnostic assessment and not for the psychiatrist. The assessment can be done virtually.

I had a good experience being diagnosed through this route.
