Bullying

Were any other girls bullied at school? I'm not being bullied but my little sis is Year 7 and she's got Downs and a girl told me she's being bullied for it. I'm not sure what to do about it. I feel like confronting the bullies but I don't want to make it worse for Holly. I won't say to the teachers because no one does that in our school, if you grass you'll be singled out later on. So I think I need to deal with it but I don't know how.

Was any of you bullied? If you could say how you dealt with it that would be a big help.

Thanks.

  • Hi,

Im really sorry to hear about this happening to your sister. I recommend being vocal online (maybe Twitter for social support) and discussing this with the head of the school. In particular, I recommend you highlight the disproportionate discrimination and violence (including bullying) that disabled people face.

It may help to express your concerns to the principal that the school is not fostering a safe and supportive environment for more marginalised students, and to ask what strategies/policies the school currently has in place for this. I’d mention that you would like follow-up regarding this and your sisters situation. And if this gets you nowhere, I’d also recommend going to the school board to tell them what your concerns are that aren’t being addressed.

This is more than an individual problem, and the responsibility should not be on you or your sister alone. It’s a community-based issue also, and there should be greater support and recognition to best address this.

I hope this helps and good luck.
