First time post - husband to suspected autistic wife

Hi. My wife soon turns 40 and the stresses of the pandemic brought to light the likelihood that she’s neurodiverse. Our kids (9yr girl, 7yr boy) have already started the processes of getting assessed through the NHS but she wants to get assessed for a number of reasons.

I don’t know where to start, we live in West Sussex. Please can someone help as it’s very stressful for us all especially her and she’s loathed to do anything like join a forum like this or speak on the phone etc.

what can I do and what are our options please?

thank you

  • Hi, and welcome to the forum.

If you’re looking for potential routes for your wife to get assessed, I’ve just been through the process with Psychiatry UK via the NHS Right To Choose.

You can find more information at the link below, but basically what’s involved would be your wife seeing the GP and if they feel a referral is appropriate then she can elect to use Psychiatry UK via this process.

My GP suggested I use this route as it would be quicker than using the NHS services. As a rough guide, I had my GP appointment in October and my assessment with the psychiatrist was on 13th February. I’ve had a verbal ASD diagnosis and am just waiting for my report to come through.
