4 yo non verbal autistic girl & toilet anxiety

My 4 year old has been using the toilet these past 6 months (previously the potty) she stopped using the potty as her own choice (just refused to go on and would always point to the toilet) but lately she will only go to the toilet on a morning when she gets up and before she goes to bed. She won’t use it during the day, she doesn’t have any accidents and isn’t in nappies, she just point blank refuses to go. I’m totally stuck as to how to crack this? I know it’s got to be some sort of anxiety but I’m just baffled as to why she will happily use it morning and night but not during the day. Unless she has drank a lot then she will go but otherwise she wont go until the evening.

Has anyone got any tips on how I can manage this? Thanks

  • Hi, thank you for your reply, I suppose I just assumed it maybe a little uncomfortable going so long between toilet trips, but she’s never had any problems occur from only going morning and night. She does drink regularly during the day.

  • If she's not having accidents and will go if she's drunk a lot, then it sounds like she's just not going because she doesn't need to.  Why do you need her to go in between?  The only issue I can think of is preparing for a trip out, but if she can hold it for England then that's not an issue either.

The only thing I'd suggest is getting her to drink more.  Check how concentrated her output looks.  Personally I had no idea what being thirsty felt like at that age, so only drank out of habit and needed reminding.  She might be less hydrated than her peers.
