Can anyone explain why I’m the opposite?

I’ve recently seen so many posts/articles online about girls with autism behaving really well at school and then having meltdowns at home as a result of being exhausted from masking all day. I was the opposite and I just don’t know why. I was awful at school - like excluded/suspended multiple times from year 8 onwards. But at home I was literally an angel child, so much so that my parents never believed the school when they would report what happened each day.

Can anyone offer any explanation as to why this may be?

  • I don't think this post is in the wrong category tbh, so I hope that alleviates some anxiety here. As to your question to be honest we aren't a uniform bunch of people, there's autistic folks that have a lot of overlap but then also many with a lot of diffrences, and a lot of old ideas about what autism is and particularly how it is viewed through a gendered lens are being scrutinised and updated. Unfortunately a lot of articles aren't written by autists in the first place and secondly often are based on outdated information. Also just because there is a "general rule" doesn't mean you are wrong if your experiences fall outside of that.
