My daughter hasn't been to school

My 12 yr old daughter was recently diagnosed with autism, (although, I knew from when she was at least 2 yrs old, but had to fight for a diagnosis). She currently hasnt been in school for almost 4 weeks. I don't know what has triggered it, she says she wants to go but her body is stopping her ( anxiety).  She is a lovely, sweet girl and I hate seeing her like this. Camhs have declined my referral.  I haven't had contact with the school send team since the beginning of last week< I feel completely on my own, I don't know what I should be doing, I cant get a G.P appointment, I know my daughter needs to talk to someone  before she can go back to school. I 'm worried she's going to get worse and never go back. I've emailed another support service but that can take 4 weeks, is it only at crisis point that support is available? Or if you have the funds to go privately? Has anyone any suggestions that I'm missing?

  • Yes, avoid Camhs at all cost, in fact any mental health service, its a very slippery slope. During the lockdown, everyone did home schooling, do that again, you can legally sihn up for it. I did it for four years, due to bullying and not wanting my son to face it anymore. My eldest stepped out of school for a year and then joined his younger brother when he needed support joining the big school. There are always round these things. just give your daughter an out and then she will open up if there is anything deeper.

You can try a psycoligist, but make sure you agree on thiis, yes waiting lists forthings are a pain, perhaps try a couple of private sessions when the time is right. However, if your daughter just feel happier to stay home ona temp basis then go with that.

When I did home schooling I went all out getting books and staying up all hours creating lessons, but it bogged my son I think. So we under the advice of the school inspecter got away from the desk and got out more, we ditched the desk in the lastt year and he followed his interest of languages and self talk online quite a lot, amazed me, however in the meantime, we visited Camns again and can of left high and dry with no help of my sons anxities.

He ended up in hospital on all sorts of drugs for 13 years, we are at withdrawal stage now and its horrible. If I could turn clock back and had advice like this I would. All the best
