Son recently diagnosed with ASD where to start?

Hi There, my 12 year old son was diagnosed a month ago with ASD (what would have been Asperger's) and I really don't know where to start.  To cut a long story short it's taken from me being aware of his differences  in P1 to now to get a diagnosis.  When we got the letter from the Paediatrician I honestly thought it would outline tangible help for him in school and at home but really didn't.  He is really bright but struggles in school for a variety of reasons and I really just want some advice, I have an appointment with his school to discuss his diagnosis but not sure I'm armed with enough knowledge to really fight his corner.  I have tried numerous times to get through to the NAS helpline but placed on hold each time.  If anyone can give me some advice to get started that would be brilliant.  Thank you.

  • Thank you so much for your response I'll definitely invest in the book you suggested.

There is a book titled, 'The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome' by Tony Attwood, and as far as developmental psychology and everything you will need know regarding your sons educational needs goes ~ it really is the complete package, and costs just under twenty pounds sterling when brought anew. Seriously a worthwhile investment and just so so elucidating in so many ways. The book for example is written using a balance of aspergian and neurotypical linguistic structures ~ learn each others mind sets session and all that.
