My son, who has just received an A in English at Alevels, is being assessed for autism. He understands idioms, etc. He can be very literal but his vocabulary and everything else when it comes to English/language is good.
He has always had trouble fitting in because his social skills are very poor. He doesn't understand what people are thinkg unless they are quite obviously sad, angry or happy. He constantly asks if somebody could be upset with him because he can't read social ques. He finds it difficult to know how to make a conversation or keep it going. He doesn't understand body language. He likes to be around people but can't adapt to different situations. He can be too formal in relaxed situations for example. He doesn't know how to behave in situations such as a supermarket. He feels and looks awkward.
He finds eye contact painful. He is not shy. Taking him in to any shop he becomes overwhelmed by the people the music, etc.
Is it impossible to have an autism diagnosis if a person's language is good?
thank you.
