focusing on work

hi all, just recently i have been having serious problems in college. i simply cant focus on work, ill be fine for the first half hour or so, but as soon as i stop doing the work, even for a second, i find it incredably difficult to get going again.

on mondays i do have special tuition time with someone to help me get the work done, more as motivational support than actual assistance with the work itself, but i dont want to have to rely on this sort of thing as it feels like im pandering to my disability, does anyone have any advance or has been in this situation before

  • I can certainly confirm that problem myself. Getting motivated even now is incredibly difficult, but was certainly a problem in my student days.

I wonder though if it is just an AS thing - I think it is widely reported but might just be worse for AS students.

Having taught until recent retirement, many students find getting started on anything difficult, and as I was willing to be emailed, I had plenty of email exchanges trying to inspire temporarily defunct minds, even in very able students. I guess it is like writer's block.

I find a way round it is to make lists, even if mechanistic and dry, after a while something crystallizes. Getting something down on paper, even if just notes and arrows, will actually start to fire up the brain to get properly interested.

  • I know what you mean.

Half the time I end up getting stressed for most of the lesson before I can finally focus on an idea and get on with work again. Doesn't help when you have about three hours of the same subject in 6th form. What I've started doing is when I lose interest in what I'm doing or feel like I've done the minimal amout needed, I'll try doing some work from another subject, usually I end up linking back to the lesson I'm in and get inspired again.

    Hope things get better.
