Any advice/Anyone else have NLD

My daughter is 12 and has NLD, I am wondering wether she has ASD, depanding on who you speak to depands on weather they believe it's on the ASD map.. She doesn't like to brush her teeth,have a shower.  She also goes in to meltdown about end of the world or a comet hitting the earth and thinking she is going to die. She seems to have got it in to her head that unrine is posion, she lines the toliet with paperto stop splash back and doesn't like it if the part of her pants that touches her gentails come in to contact with any part of her because of germs.

I feel very alone as NLD isn't really supported more known in USA. But the more I read about ASD, I see so many things that I can relate to. I have a wonderful Hubby and 2 younger boys (who don't have any diffcultity) But it is very hard to explain that the way their sister behave's isn't the way they should.

 

 

  • Does NLD stand for Non-Verbal Learning Disorder? I have read about this on one particular USA website but was not aware that it was diagnosed in the UK.  Many of the traits apply to me too, and I have been diagnosed with AS and OCD.

    The NLD traits that apply to me are the following:

    Excellent verbal skills

    A prolific reader, but I prefer fact to fiction. At school my reading age for fiction was way in advance of my comprehension age.

    I have dyscalculia and so I am innumerate

    I have a visual-spatial impairment: can't read maps, follow complex instructions, not good at some complex motor skills like making my bed. I cannot play games that involve strategy or spatial skills, and I am hopelessly bad at jigsaw puzzles. Conversely, many people with AS have excellent spatial skills.

    I am more social than many people with AS, but my high verbal intelligence has compensated for my non-verbal deficits: I struggle to understand the subtle, intricate cues, and so I find it hard to keep and maintain friendships, although I love human company - but only on my terms.

    I am very anxious and have contamination fears which are similar to your daughter's.  I wash my hands obsessively, worry about things I hear in the news and get panic attacks.
