Hi my son is 8years old, he has autism diagnosed when he was 4 and adhd. He attends a mainstream primary school and has a teaching assistant there for most of the day. The first year and the start of the second were stressful but things settled down and his current assistant started and things were going well. He started taking medication equasym XL 30mg and settled quite well into school. This year he started p4 and the start of the year went well until his assistant unfortunately had to taken sudden leave around October time, things started to go downhill fast from there. He started hitting out in school, spitting and being very cheeky. We contacted the school on numerous occasions asking for a replacement assistant but they only had one in for an hour here and there. His teacher also had the attitude that he was just a naughty child which we complained about a few times. Things just got worse and we seen his doctor, she decided to change his medication to intuniv guanfacine. He started on 1mg now on 2 mg week four of taking them. His wonderful assistant recently started back and we had hoped things would improve. However things in school and now home too are really difficult, he hits out at teachers and other kids for no reason but it's his attitude that has really changed he answers back EVERY time he is spoken to and says everything he thinks. He is rude and cheeky all the time refusing to do work and telling everyone exactly what he thinks of them. For example yesterday he told his teacher he wasn't doing any work because she has a baby whiney voice that annoys him. He has never been like this before its a real change and I don't know what to do. Has anybody ever experienced this before? Maybe it's the medication has anybody's child ever taken this before with similar results? Please let me know if u have any advice. Thanks
