Hello,
I am the mother of a 21 year old who has Asperger's Syndrome. For the past 5 years, because of his high anxiety and very challenging behaviour, my son has been in and out of various psychiatric units. After a supported living placement broke down last September he has spent the past 5 months in a psychiatric intensive care unit. The staff are very caring and do the best they can to cope with his extremely challenging behaviour( he is restrained on a daily basis). Everyone involved with him knows that he is not in the right environment- it is noisy and unpredictable and is making his behaviour even worse. Various teams have been scouring the country to find an autism specific unit suitable for his needs but they are few and far between. There is one place in Warrington which has been to assess him and could help him but they have no beds. Next week a specialist team is coming from Northumberland who we hope may be able to recommend places. His case was considered to be urgent last September and here we still are, no further forward. i just wondered if anyone else has had similar experiences?
