My grandson who has just turned 6 is undergoing assessment for Aspergers, Autism and ADHD. It’s been going on for a few years now but has finally got a referral to the Child and Family mental health services.
We live in Scotland and so far I have been very impressed with the level of care and understanding, that is until he started his new year back in September. From then it’s just been downhill. His behaviour at home worsened and he would be in absolute bits refusing to go to school.
Finally (due to his level of communication) we found that on Wednesdays (and sometimes on other days) there is a teacher whom seems to grab him and hold his hands down when he is not behaving. Knowing that If I confronted said teacher with what I know it would be dismissed/covered up and ignored. So instead, I and my grandsons mother spoke with her about his “issues” and that he becomes so upset about going to school he will throw himself to the floor and throw-up. It’s that bad. I told her if it was to continue he would not be attending school when she is teaching. She also did not know that he is being assessed.
I think and hope that this matter has been improved as my grandson seems not quite so worked up about these days now, however his behaviour has worsened still.
I fully understand that he needs to learn right from wrong and it is going to be a slow process in teaching him this. He gets carried away and doesn’t understand the fine lines, for example he got detention last week due to hitting a boy in the face. Turned out after speaking with the mother that her son also got detention as they were playing zombies and fighting each other although both explained it was an accident.
We have had a few more of these detentions over the last few weeks and considering that he has never once been in trouble before we can only think something is just not right. But his communication skills are limited. So its hard to get to the bottom of it.
Anyway, so now he gets another two days detention which we thought was a bit over lunch break.....NO......all breaks for two days in a room with no window and NO playtime, NO going outside. Over 7 hours a day with NO bloody break or fresh air. I was so mad when I found out last night that I have stayed up all night trying to find answers at how can this be lawful or even just ok. Apparently this time he hit an older boy and they said it took two teachers to get him off, how true all this is I don’t know, as he never used to hit and on the other occasions once we spoke with the other parents is was just play and they couldn’t understand why he had been given detention.
I went into the school this morning and asked for a copy of their discipline policy which soon lead to the head coming out to see me to be told no teachers are available and he had no time to get me copy.
I left saying that I want insurance that my grandson be given some breaks today and not to be left in school and that I would return to see him after school.
I am so gutted and upset and look forward to any advice you can give. Thank you kindly in advance.
